Christian Education, Presbyterian Community of Congo (CPC)

The Christian Education Department of the CPC has the job of developing training materials for laity and clergy and for implementing various training opportunities across the church. Regular visits to the churches are one of the tasks of the department, which seeks to serve a church membership of 2 million Christians. This fund provides critical support for the department.

The Congo Presbyterian Church supports education in a variety of ways. Contributions to this ECO will help the PC(USA)'s partners furnish schools with teaching materials, training teachers, repairing facilities and building new ones, all to meet the needs of the growing school-age population.

The economy of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has collapsed, but our partner church, the Presbyterian Community of Kinshasa (CPK), is educating its young people even under the most difficult conditions. Even in the midst of turmoil in the country, IMPROKA, the Protestant printing press, continues to provide Christian literature and training materials for the church in Congo . Funds are needed to purchase paper and other printing supplies.

AIDS Care

Christ-centered care for AIDS patients addresses physical, spiritual and emotional needs by providing medical supplies, clinical referrals, food, household help, pastoral support and prayer. Gifts to this ECO will assist in all aspects of patient care and training of care providers as well as support for the caregivers themselves.

AIDS Crisis Overseas

AIDS continues to be a crisis for entire families in many parts of the world. Gifts to this account will support congregation-based AIDS projects, prevention education, various forms of training and continuing education events, including the training of pastors, materials development, support of hospitals doing testing, counseling and training of staff among other things.

AIDS Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Africa

Because the needs of orphans and their caregivers (often a grandparent or an older sibling) are so desperate, this ECO has been established as a separate ECO. Gifts to this account go specifically to projects working with children who have lost one or both parents to AIDS to help provide their basic needs including food, clothing, education and medical care. Through the ECO people who work to care for the orphans are also trained in ways to best support these children.

Overall health care and well-being of the local populations depend upon complex factors, including activities and behaviors of the community that reduce the risk of illness. IMCK Good Shepherd Hospital

Institut Medical Chretien du Kasai (IMCK) is the primary health care facility and a center for medical education in the central region of the Democratic Republic of  Congo. Its services are centered at Good Shepherd Hospital, a 160-bed facility in the village of Tshikaji, where surgery, obstetrics, pediatrics, general medicine, ophthalmology, radiology and laboratory services are offered regardless of the patient's ability to pay. IMCK also has a large outpatient clinic in the nearby city of kananga. To continue to provide services to the poorest of the poor, contributions are needed to purchase medicines and health supplies.

The central function of IMCK is education. The nursing and lab schools currently provide the Democratic Republid of Congo with hundreds of trained health care professionals. Presbyterian Community of Kinshasa Clinics, Kinshasa

The Presbyterian Community of Kinshasa is setting up 24 health zones to meet the needs of the urban poor. These primary health clinics have been sorely stressed as a result of the political transition. Because of the refugee influx their patient loads have increased and the stocks of medicines and medical supplies are seriously depleted. Funds are needed to restock the clinics.

Water for All

Without clean water, good health is impossible. In many parts of the world people suffer chronic and life-threatening illness and children die needlessly for lack of accessible clean water. Mission Personnel

John and Gwenda Fletcher — Surgeon / Education Consultant

John Fletcher, a physician, serves on the staff of the Christian Medical Institute of the Kasai and also works with the Presbyterian Community of Congo (CPC) medical director in support of the CPC medical program. He teaches medical students and residents and nursing students at the IMCK and other mission hospitals.  Gwenda works with both the CPC and the Presbyterian Church of Kinshasa to help with teacher training, administration, and community involvement.

Dr. Michael and Nancy Haninger — Obstetrician and Gynecologist/Nurse Midwife

Michael and Nancy Haninger are medical missionaries working at the Christian Medical Institute of the Kasai and the Good Shepherd Hospital in Tshikaji. They serve in partnership with the Presbyterian Church of the Congo. Mike’s primary role as an ob-gyn physician is training nursing and medical students, especially in reducing maternal and newborn injury and death. Nancy, a registered nurse, carries out direct patient care and regional village health education, including a project that promotes the use of the highly nutritious leaves of the moringa tree to combat malnutrition.

  Larry and Inge Sthreshley — Health Consultant

Larry and Inge Sthreshley were both born and raised in the Congo by missionary parents. They’ve now served with PC(USA) for 20 years in Africa, mostly in Congo. Larry is director of Project AXxes, a large rural health organization that builds and maintains a health infrastructure for rural Congo. AXxes focuses on health outcomes (as opposed to building institutions) in southern and eastern Congo, including regions caught up in what has been called the “world’s deadliest war.” Larry heads a team of 50 people that has an impact on the health of 8 million people—fighting malaria, TB, malnutrition, and childhood illnesses such as diarrhea and respiratory infection.

CPC Congo Communication Project           

The Congo Communication Project seeks to improve communication both within the Congo Presbyterian Church (CPC) as well as with its partners around the world by the development of an Internet Cafe located at the IMPROKA site in Kananga, a computer laboratory at the UPRECO Seminary and Law School and an Internet connection at the CPC Headquarters in Kananga.

CPK Women and Families Ministries

The Department of Women and Families of the Presbyterian Community of Kinshasa gathers women to study Scripture, worship and pray with and for one another, and in seminars and meetings they also learn about community health and life skills. Women's Work, CPC

The Department of Women of the Presbyterian Community of Congo (CPC) operates various programs to minister to the spiritual needs of the women, while also recognizing the difficult conditions in which nearly all of them live. In addition to organizing opportunities for shared worship, prayer and Bible study, the department teaches women skills that will help them meet physical needs of their families, such as making soap, tie-dying clothes to sell, gardening and nutrition. Support for this ECO will help the department implement its many programs.
