PDA has begun to use video as a way of telling the story of disaster recovery.  Our first DVD was included with the 2005 PDA annual report to supplement the stories of response to the Asia tsunami, Sudan, Democratic Republic of the Congo and the 2005 hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma.

The magnitude of the tsunami and the 2005 hurricanes necessitated long-term, multi-year responses. Video stories help to chronicle the ongoing recovery efforts of these major disasters.

Hurricane Ike – The Forgotten Storm of 2008

Hurricane Ike DVD

Hurricane Ike, September 2008, was the third most destructive hurricane to make landfall in the United States. This storm that struck the Texas coast was overlooked by the media due to coverage of the 2008 presidential election and news of economic decline.

Videos are available to share with your congregation, encouraging them to help families impacted by Hurricane Ike through prayer, giving, and volunteering. One-minute and five-minute segments are available on DVD.  Order your copy of Hurricane Ike: The Forgotten Storm (one minute or five minute segment.)

Since 2002, PDA has been responding to a food security situation caused by drought in Africa. Following the relief stage, the recovery program is now working to promote self-reliance through intensified developmental services such as food security, child survival and psychosocial programs. [Read a report on the Malawi Foods Resource Bank program.] Three videos share the hope brought by your gifts and support.

Democratic Republic of Congo

In the DRC, the agricultural livelihood of the rural population has been threatened by 10 years of war. In 2005, PDA began a four-year food security program in cooperation with the Foods Resource Bank. PDA is also supporting 19 supplementary feeding centers serving malnourished and AIDS-orphaned children.

A new Bible study curriculum, Around the Moringa Tree, is soon to be released. The curriculum, produced by Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and the Presbyterian Hunger program, focuses on using the Moringa Tree as part of an effort to provide nourishment and sustenance to many hungry people. The curriculum includes a DVD with a video segment to use with each of the five lessons.

Around the Moringa Tree can be ordered online or by calling Presbyterian Distribution Service at (800) 524-2612 and asking for item number 25412-07-022. The curriculum should be completed and ready to ship by early spring.

Southern Sudan

In January 2005, a peace accord was signed to bring to an end the civil war in southern Sudan that spanned more than 25 years. As part of the recovery process, the Resource Centre for Civil Leadership (RECONCILE) is helping survivors and church leaders engage in programs that will help bring peace and healing to those recovering from trauma, and helping as they build a healthy civil society. The following video clips provide an introduction to this video.
