To Whom It May Concern:
I am pleased to present this check in the amount of $321.66 to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. I'd like to share with you how it came to be.
This summer, the Preschool through fifth graders of Christ Presbyterian Church have been learning about service to God, community, family and friends. When we discussed the notion of "sharing what you have" the children decided to have a Toy Swap one Sunday. But after hearing about the devastating floods in the Midwest, the kids decided to raise money by having a Toy Sale instead.
They brought in their gently used toys, cleaned and spiffed them up, and then priced them. Our goal was 40 toys (the number of kids) to raise $50. But as time went on, more and more toys appeared. Children who had initially told me they loved all their toys and couldn't imagine parting with any of them, suddenly started bringing in two, three and four toys apiece.
On "Toy Sale Sunday" the congregation flocked to the table, which by now was groaning with over 150 toys. Within 20 minutes, every toy had been purchased (save for one very sad, very broken truck) with some congregation members declining to collect their change and others buying many toys to be donated elsewhere. The kids staffing the table ran up to me with delight on their faces to tell me that our cash register (a shoe box) was full. And it was!
I am so proud of these kids and their open, generous hearts. May this gift help other children to regain some small piece of normalcy in their lives once again.
Sincerely,
Lesley Abrams
