Read Taking a bite out of the elephant: Presbyterians, Methodists join to continue rebuilding in southwest Louisiana, story by Bethany Furkin, Presbyterian News Service

Background: The Lake Charles Village is a working partnership with the Presbytery of South Louisiana to help in the rebuilding of Lake Charles and communities in surrounding parishes (counties).  Homeowners are still trying to rebuild after hurricane Rita, which came ashore in September 2005 with a force at landfall greater than hurricane Katrina. Volunteers in Lake Charles will be impressed with the Cajun hospitality and affection shown by the area residents.

Location and coordination: This village is located in the city of Lake Charles, Louisiana, a town of 79,000 surrounded by many beautiful natural reserves and an extensive inland and coastal beach network.

Housing is accommodated by the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Charles — with kitchen, laundry, shower facilities, and ample ‘kick back’ space for prayer sessions, TV, fellowship or just quiet reading — all under one roof.

Home rebuilding is done in collaboration with the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), which designates homes for our volunteers to work on.  The Presbytery of South Louisiana’s construction coordinator leads teams in the construction process.

Capacity: 30 in three separate dorm rooms within the church fellowship hall

Needs as of February 2009: There is a need for volunteers with some skills in drywall and cabinet installation, tile work and finishing (trim, paint). Volunteers are encouraged to check out their local Home Depot or Lowe’s for a refresher course in areas they need. Our construction coordinator is also prepared to help on site with refresher training on areas of needed work.

Opportunities for Worship: First Presbyterian Church of Lake Charles offers two worship experiences — a 9:00 a.m. informal, contemporary worship service and an 11:00 a.m. traditional service.  Both services feature music, scripture reading and teaching.
