1. Our congregation would like to collect clothes, food, or supplies. How can we respond with material resources?

Donations of clothing and other materials are generally not appropriate for disaster response.  Warehouse space and transportation costs must be focused on critically needed supplies. Review the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Material Aid Policy.

One of the primary needs related to the 2005 hurricane response is for building supplies. A designated account has been established to help with the purchase of these supplies DR000174.

Individuals that are participating as members of volunteer workteams may purchase gift cards to Lowes or Home Depot to help with this need. The gift card should be turned in the manager upon arrival at the Presbyterian Volunteer Village and a receipt for the value of the card will be issued at that time.

2. How much of my donation will be used in the relief effort?

A minimum of 95 percent of designated funds will be used to help those most in need. Up to five percent of your gift will be used to cover shared administrative costs associated with the processing and distribution of your gift.

Gifts by check may be given through your local Presbyterian congregation or mailed to Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), 100 Witherspoon Street, Louisville, KY 40202-1396. Please include the designated giving account number on your check. Credit card donations can be made online or by calling PresbyTel at 800-872-3283.

  5. How has the Presbyterian faith community been affected?

Approximately 80 Presbyterian churches sustained major damage or total destruction. Many congregations in the affected areas have not held worship services either because of damaged facilities, or the relocation of congregation members. This has lead to a financial strain on pastors.

6. What is being done for Presbyterian pastors and churches that have been affected?

About $4 million of the total funds — along with funds that come in specifically designated — are being used to support the recovery of Presbyterian congregations and staff. The decisions around expenditure of these funds is being handled by an Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) for Congregational Recovery that was formed to address the needs of Presbyterian pastors and congregations. The IATF includes a representative from each of the six entities of the General Assembly along with representation from Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and representatives from the Synods of the Sun and Living Waters.

7. Can our church or church members provide shelter for those displaced by the hurricane?

During the initial phase of the disaster, PDA — along with many other organizations — tried to respond to the wonderful outpouring of hospitality and offers for the use of homes and apartments. PDA did not receive requests for this service and therefore, discontinued accepting information from churches and individuals.

9. How are funds being used?

The Presbyterian Disaster Response supports three primary functions:

  1. Support for the recovery structure that provides for construction of homes, ensures case management, and coordinates work teams;
  2. Support for churches as they recover; and
  3. Provide building materials for survivors with unmet needs.

Funds given to DR000169 are being used to provide needed assistance to disaster survivors and necessary structures to enable an effective response. This includes helping Presbyterian congregations and middle governing bodies in their response efforts. Funds are also being used to support the broader response by the faith community.

Funds given to DR000161 are being used to help Presbyterian pastors and clergy whose congregations have been impacted or who have personally been impacted. This will particularly help pastors of smaller congregations and may include salary continuation.

Funds given to DR000163 will be used to help repair or rebuild churches that have been damaged.

Funds given to DR000174 are being used to purchase building materials.

Funds are being disbursed in coordination with middle governing bodies in the affected areas to ensure equity and accountability. This is especially true of funds to the DR000161 and DR000163 accounts.

10. Can we adopt a church in the disaster area?

PDA believes the most efficient and equitable way to make these matches is to match unaffected or sponsoring churches with the presbyteries within whose boundaries the affected churches reside, and is making referrals to these presbyteries. It seems appropriate that the presbyteries do these matches so that they can monitor and know the status of their congregations. [Read more]
