Greensboro, N.C. – Even as the members of the Youth Ministries Task Force – the sixth and final special committee named by the moderator of the 218th General Assembly – gather at the Big Tent, June 11-13, in Atlanta, Ga., to convene their first meeting, Presbyterian young adults from across the region and nation will already be making a significant contribution to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) by demonstrating a new model for service and active engagement.

On Saturday, June 13, young adults ages 18-35 will be joining together for a morning of service at several mission sites in Atlanta, followed by an afternoon of discernment and sharing.

The mission sites are being coordinated by the Rev. Jannan Thomas, city director for the Atlanta offices of DOOR (Discovering Opportunities for Outreach and Reflection), a joint Presbyterian and Mennonite agency that hosts groups and individuals in missions, service and learning experiences in six U.S. cities.

“It will be exciting to introduce people to the city of Atlanta and to the wide range of ministries that folks are doing here,” Thomas said. Potential sites for the Young Adult Mission Experience include the Central Presbyterian Outreach and Advocacy Center and Decatur Cooperative Ministries.

“The Presbyterian young adults that are coming in to our city during the Big Tent will be joining in with the work that God is already doing here in Atlanta,” said Thomas. “Being a young adult myself, I feel that my voice is really being heard by the denomination when there are specific things for young adults to do, like this service day.”

Young adults who are not registered for the Big Tent may participate in the Young Adult Mission Experience for a $25 Saturday-only fee, which includes a light breakfast, lunch and transportation. There is no additional cost for those registered for the three-day Big Tent event.
