As a missionary-in-residence in the Worldwide Ministries Division from August 2002 to March 2004, Layne worked with the area office for the Middle East, the Interfaith Office, and the Office of Global Education and International leadership development. Among her responsibilities were mission interpretation, the Interfaith Listening Project, and being liaison with church-related organizations and NGOs in Israel, Palestine, and Egypt.

She served four years (1997 to 2001) in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Israel as site coordinator for the Young Adult Volunteer program. When that was closed during the second Intifada, she served for a year with CEOSS, the Coptic Evangelical Organization for Social Services, in Cairo, Egypt. She was the international coordinator and worked on funds development.

Prior to her service in Jerusalem, Layne was a development assistant for AMERC, the Appalachian Ministries Resource Center in Berea, Kentucky. From 1993 to1996, while attending McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois, Layne was a teaching assistant and English tutor. She graduated from McCormick with her MDiv degree and was ordained to the ministry of Word and Sacrament in Fairmount Presbyterian Church in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. During seminary, Layne had two summer internships in San Francisco, California, one with Old First Presbyterian Church and the other with California Pacific Medical Center. Before attending seminary, Layne attended Berea College in Berea, Kentucky, and worked as a teaching assistant there as well. She graduated with a BA degree in history and philosophy. Prior to college, Layne worked in sales for Prudential Bache and Smith Barney, both in Cleveland, Ohio.

Layne is a minister member of Western Reserve Presbytery. She is the mother of two adult children.
