The Boones ended their term of service in March 2007.

Jay and Susan Boone teach at Central China Normal University in the city of Wuhan. They have been under appointment as PC(USA) mission co-workers since 1995, though they have been teaching in China since 1991.

Central China Normal University is the seventh Chinese university at which the Boones have taught, and also the seventh Chinese city in which they have lived. Prior to their assignment in Wuhan (central China) the Boones taught in Chengdu (near Tibet), in Changchun (in far northeastern China, near Korea), in the southern cities of Hangzhou and Suzhou, and also in Beijing and the nearby city of Tianjin in northern China.

Jay teaches international economic law, which students in China refer to as a “hot” subject. China has recently joined the World Trade Organization and is making efforts to be a society based on law with normal relations with other countries. Teachers of law and economic theory from Western countries are very much in demand. China’s universities have become very crowded, as the government is seeking to increase the number of people with a university education. As a result, and also because of the popularity of the subject that he teaches, Jay’s classes are quite large, often with 100 or more students.

Jay is the author of the textbook on international economic law that is used in his classes. Jay also works with postgraduate students who are planning to do further study in the United Kingdom, giving them information about the legal systems in the United Kingdom and the United States.

Susan teaches English as a foreign language. She has taught both undergraduate and postgraduate students, but in Wuhan she has been working with teachers. China’s Ministry of Education would like to have part of all courses—not only language courses—taught in English. This is increasingly necessary because many scientific and technical breakthroughs are only described in the English language. Some courses even use U.S. textbooks. Many of the teachers at China’s universities have studied some English, but few have used it in their teaching. Susan helps make them more comfortable using English to conduct their classes. Susan also works with postgraduate students headed for further study in the United Kingdom, since they must show English-language proficiency in order to get British visas.

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Jay attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, before receiving his BA degree in economics from the University of Texas in Austin. He earned his MA and JD degrees from the University of Texas. He later became the vice-general manager at Intortech Corporation in China. After practicing law for several years, he taught at the Foreign Trade Institute in Tianjin, China, and the Foreign Affairs College in Beijing.

Susan is a native of Indianapolis, Indiana. She studied English at Vanderbilt University and the University of Texas. Before becoming a manager at the Country Cheese Company in Berkeley, California, she taught at Management Technologies International in Tianjin. She taught at the Foreign Trade College for two years, before going to teach at the Foreign Affairs College.

The Boones are members of Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church in Walnut Creek, California. They are the parents of three adult children.
