About the Challenge
World Mission Challenge will send PC(USA) mission workers to crisscross the country from September 25 through October 18, 2009, to tell Presbyterians how God is at work around the world.
Patterned after the highly successful Mission Challenge ’07, this 23-day effort is intended to raise the profile of Presbyterian mission workers and lift up the Presbyterian commitment to doing mission in partnership. In more than 170 years of mission history, Presbyterians have developed strong relationships with the Body of Christ in every region of the world.
During World Mission Challenge, several mission workers will be accompanied by international church leaders, who will together share how they work cooperatively in God’s mission. This pilot project is being done in conjunction with the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program, whose International Peacemaker Program sends international church leaders around the United States every fall to speak to Presbyterians about peace and justice issues in their countries.
We anticipate about 40 mission workers will participate in World Mission Challenge with each speaker visiting up to four presbyteries. Our goal is to have at least 140 presbyteries hosting a mission worker. Mission workers will spend a week in most presbyteries.
There will be no fund-raising component to World Mission Challenge in 2009 other than to let the church know that mission workers depend upon continued giving by churches to continue to serve. Individuals will also have the opportunity to give to support mission workers in general or to support any specific mission worker.
